Awaiting Your Return From Shore |
Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to dock at either San
Basilio or the Marittima Station. Either one is about 20 to 30 minutes
by vapoertto to St. Mark's Square. Vaporetti are inexpensive
water taxis that travel to some of the major attractions, especially
along the Grand Canal. You first buy a ticket at the ticket booth,
stating your destination. |
Shopping. The areas around St. Mark’s Square
and the Rialto Bridge are filled with shops and designer boutiques. Shop
for Murano glassware, hand-made lace, embroidered linens, leather
articles, knitwear, and gondolieri striped T-shirts and straw
hats. Shops close 12:30 to 3 and Sundays. |
Cuisine. Restaurants range from
trattorias to outrageously expensive top class restaurants. You can dine
in secluded courtyards, roof top gardens or terraces along the Grand
Canal. Seafood is excellent, as are pasta and veal dishes. |
Other Sights
Gondola Ride. This is doubtless the most romantic, but also
a rather expensive, way to experience Venice’s unique ambiance. Be sure
to establish the price and your route before leaving the pier. Gondola
rides are popular in the daytime as well as in the evening, especially
when accompanied by the favorite tunes of a local tenor.
The Lido. Vaporetti connect this fashionable seaside beach
resort with Venice. The island has one of Italy’s best 18-hole golf
courses. Getting to Lido only gets you to the island. The beach is
blocks farther.
Murano, Burano and Torcello. This area is mainly famous as
the home of Venice’s glass-blowing industry. Regular boat service
connects the island of Murano to Venice. From Murano one can continue to
Burano and Torcello, known for their particular charm, skilled
lace-making and medieval monuments. The selection of glass is best on
Murano, and the trip there is scenic and fun.
Internet Connection. Internet facilities can be found at
the Net House located at Calle delle Botteghe, near Campo Santo Stefano.
Golf. Golf Club Cansigilio. The Lido boasts one
of Italy’s best 18-hole golf courses. Ask on board. |
